"This is a season of chaos and confusion," the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., the controversial former pastor of Barack Obama, told a suburban Richmond audience today.

"We’re in the middle of a war that started with a lie." But faith, Wright said, overcomes the facts.

Citing Luke 1:5-25 — how a barren Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist — Wright spoke of impossible situations that can be resolved by prayer and faith.

"Faith produced Martin Luther King .¤.¤. then a 42-year-old black senator," he said, and hundreds in the congregation leapt to their feet. "And five years later, look what God can do."

The 42-year-old senator is Obama, now the likely Democratic presidential nominee. Wright, who did not mention Obama by name, is the pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Wright spoke this morning to a crowd of hundreds at St. Paul’s Baptist Church on Creighton Road in Henrico County, where the Life Empowerment Super Conference is being held.

The conference runs through Friday. Organizers refused to allow still or video cameras into the service and did not allow reporters to get near Wright this morning.

Though most of his sermon focused on prayer, Wright didn’t mince words when it came to politics.

"John and Jesus were born in a time of chaos and confusion," he said.

"Look at the situation. You’ve got a king who is crazy. You got the murder of individual citizens. You got a commander-in-chief who can do what he wants and not answer to anybody. That’s Herod the Great, y’all.

"Does that sound familiar?"

Wright’s words were inspiring, not inflammatory, said several people who heard him speak. "He is a man of God, a great man of character," said Kevin Baker of Henrico.

Wright, a mentor to St. Paul’s pastor, the Rev. Lance Watson, has spoken at the church several times previously. But today’s appearance drew reporters eager to see if he would ignite any further polemics. No comments No trackbacks
